History: According to Pali scriptures, the Lord Buddha, after nine months of attainment to Buddhahood, traveled to Rajagaha, the capital of Magadh state, and at that time was a center of religious activities of different sects, and stayed at Veluwan Mahavihara. On the full moon day of the third lunar month, 1,250 Arahans from different places came to pay homage to the Lord Buddha without prior notification. On the evening of the day the Lord Buddha gave the assembly a discourse "Ovadha Patimokha" laying down the principles of His teachings summarized into three acts: To abstain from evil, to do good and to purify the mind.
